Shown below on the left is the FAR attached to the FAPC. It adds a lot more PALS on the sides. Whether that's needed in addition to a battle belt is up to the user 
But if only ballistic protection on the sides is needed, the FAR panels can always be left blank, or side torso plates attached for protection against rifle rounds
